Myrtle is our 1979 contemporary style home. She’s a fixer-upper that we instantly fell in love with from squealing over her listing on Zillow to knowing she was our future home the first time we saw her in person.
We adore her unique exterior, quirky floor plan, and the beautiful neighborhood in which she resides.
Why the name Myrtle?
We have a tendency to name the larger inanimate objects in our lives – our cars, our camper, etc. Since we were about to undertake a contemporary home remodel – and one of the biggest projects of our lives – we knew this old girl needed a name.
Desiring to match Myrtle’s quirkiness, we turned to literature and film for inspiration. Tim Burton’s films are unapologetically weird, and one name that came into consideration was “Ichabod” from the film Sleepy Hollow.
But the name didn’t quite have that special magic, so it was tossed aside.
Other ideas were chewed over, and eventually we started thinking about Harry Potter characters because… why not? We both love the franchise, and there’s certainly no lack of quirky characters to be found.
Long story short, when listing off the myriad character names from the books, we paused when we got to Moaning Myrtle.
Myrtle! What a cute name! It rolls off the tongue, is a fitting name for this corner of the country, and Moaning Myrtle herself was certainly a unique lil’ lady.
So that’s how the name of our home, and the name of this blog, was born.
Taking a flailing belly flop into a new project:
Though Myrtle is beautiful, located in a dream neighborhood, and full of many wonderful features… girlfriend needs a lot of work to become the dream home that we know she can be.
While the idea of such an immense remodel may be overwhelming and daunting to some – I admit, we took pause ourselves before deciding to make an offer – this actually illustrates my feelings about this whole thing:
From the first time we stepped across Myrtle’s threshold, we saw nothing but potential. We didn’t see her as she was, we saw what we wanted her to be. I walked through her rooms with some kind of android vision overlaying my own, like those 3D visuals on Property Brothers where walls are disappearing, materials are being replaced, and everything morphs into something totally new.
At the time of this post we are very close to closing on this glorious property, and then… let the fun begin!!
